Philosophy overlaps with many areas of inquiry, but it has a unique concern. It is concerned with universal and general theories. Universals: qualities, characteristics, defining traits, categories, not specific items at some time at some place, but categories of items, events, etc. , Generality: ranging over a wide area, not of narrow significance. Purpose of philosophy to question, debate, apply and discover correct theories of a universal and general nature on a variety of topics. Texts can be found the world over that exemplify philosophy as we understand it today. Philosophy is not the creation of the west, nor first done in the west. However, the word philosophy comes from the ancient greek: it means love (philo) of wisdom (sophia). What we call philosophy today is not what the ancient greeks understood under this term.
