Document Summary

Function of epithelia: protection, controlled permeability, transcellular vs paracellular, provide sensation via innervations, produce specialized secretion via glandular epithelia. Embryo, start off with simple sheet covering surface. Three different destinies: simple epithelium (covering epithelium, stratified epithelium (covering epithelium, may form gland (glandular epithelium) Multicellular glands from in embryo, invagination of tissue. Two kinds of glandular ep: exocrine: secrete via duct. Multicellular exocrine glands: 2 portions secretory portion and duct. Duct conductors secretory product and modify composition: endocrine: secrete internally. Multicelluar endocrine glands: iinvagination loses attachment to epithelium, surrounded by basement membrane and connective tissue, secrete cell products, taking up into blood vessels. Unicellular endocrine glands: exist in covering epithelia, part of diffuse neuroendocrine system. Secretes across basal aspect into underlying ct, taken up by vessels. Mucous glands: secretes mucinogen (carb rich, mixed with water, forms mucous), lubricant and protective layer.
