Document Summary

Freud: repressed memories can eventually come back and when not dealt with can lead to anxiety type of disorders. In obsessive compulsive disorder, when anxiety is relieved (removal of obsessive thoughts by compulsive behaviours), that is negative reinforcement. Observational learning: how our parents handle anxiety can teach us how to deal with problems with anxiety. Individual differences in the way people interpret situations exist too; theses people are hypervigilant to threats in the environment and generally can be more anxious. Stress can trigger anxiety disorders in in late teens and early adulthood (which coincides with when individuals attend university) who are already vulnerable to these disorders. Biological: chemical imbalances and genetic predisposition = greater probability of developing anxiety disorders. Can feel depressed for a while but does not mean you have mdd. Mdd is much more severe and long lasting. Mdd does not have to triggered by any event. With each generation, mdd seems to be striking earlier.
