Sept.10. Chapter 1 – Motivation: Concepts and Measurement - Paying attention to overt behavior, observable and measurable - Inferred, not directly observed Datum for inferred unconscious? Provide a clue - Dreams - Symptom - Slips of speech (paraplexi ?) - Jokes - Body Language - Needs/motives compete. Once a need/motive is complete it moves to the back and you move on to a new need. (Power motive, motive to belong, stimulation seeking, social stimulation, variety seeking motive) - Dependency - Introverts seek motivation internally oriented, extroverts seek motivation externally - Chronic under arousal, extroverts – seek excitement - Introverts doesn’t experience the same ^ - RAS provides stimulation to the cortex (neurons) extrovert does not have adequate stimulation to cortex vs introvert has adequate stimulation to the cortex - RAS may be key in brain stem, it influences the cortex 1.
