Must have some symptoms before age 12. Display 6 (5 in older adolescents and adults) or more symptoms for at least 6 months. Child may play video games for hours. Have trouble managing simultaneous stimuli or switching from one task to another. The central problem is control and self regulation (rather than simply inattention) Immature always on the run, restless, fidgety. Problematic activity level may be a larger problem in the afternoon. May perform somewhat lower on iq tests-but a range is possible. These are the processes needed for goal directed behavior. Include: working memory, verbal self regulation, self monitoring, inhibition of -- behavior, emotional regulation, and motor control. Kids with adhd struggle with executive dysfunction. May exhibit deficits in other areas as well. Social problems are very common due to loud disruptive, aggressive, and impulsive behaviors. Research indicates adhd children are at higher risk for peer rejection (hi type). Those with adhd-i may be neglected by peers.
