PSYC 4060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Nomothetic, Psychopathology, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Document Summary
People should not be broken down into parts, but rather looked upon as a whole. People need to be considered in their social contexts as well. The final cause, what purpose does it serve. People are viewed as co-creators of the world. It is important to perceive what we are born with. The main human goal is to belong and feel significant. Adler viewed human nature from a holistic, teleological (what is coming in the future and not like freud who looked at the past). People are seen as active creators of their own world. Looking at the person as a whole and not breaking them into parts like freud did (holism). 3 main tasks of life are work, community and love; all psychopathology was designed to avoid or evade one or more of life"s tasks. Idiographic rather than nomothetic nature of people; specifics are more important than generalities.
