SOWK 2020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Binge Eating, Eating Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder
Document Summary
Frequently have high rates of alcohol and other drug use, often fulfilling the criteria for a comorbid substance use disorder. Mostly found in bn and bingeing/purging anorexics, as opposed to restricting ans. Other studies show high rates of eds among females receiving treatment for alcohol and substance use problems. Shared etiology (shared caused) view the relationship between ed and substance use as consisting of a common predisposition for both forms of psychopathology. Causal relationship suggest that having problems in one area places an individual at risk for developing problems with another area. Although eating pattern disruption can occur as a result of substance use or substance withdrawal, the majority of theories suggesting a casual relationship between eds and substance use are based on the initial presence of an ed. An addictive personality has often been prpopsed to be a common mechanism for vulnerability to wide range of addictive substances and behaviors.
