The Trait Approach:
Better for understanding people’s typical beliefs on leadership than effective leadership itself

extent to which a follower views his or her leader as good or bad. So the trait
approach may actually be studies of culture.
The Style Approach:

The contingency approach:
The situation matters
No leader trait or style is effective across every situation.
The New Leadership Approach
Highly concerned with vision, charisma and the importance of ‘framing’
- Framing is shaping how information is interpreted by followers to ‘manage
meaning’ for them
- Helps articulate values, the purpose behind action

- Transactional leadership: meting out rewards and punishments to get
people to do what you want
- Transformational leadership: providing aspirational visions of a higher
purpose or transformed way of being that motivates others.
