What is leadership:
The social processes whereby one individual influences others toward attaining some
desired goal.
The History:
The trait approach: who leaders are
Style Approach: what do effective leaders do?
Contingency approach: what type of leader is effective which situation
New Leadership approach : leaders as a manager of meaning
Post charismatic, post transformational leadership approach
The Trait Approach:
Better for understanding people’s typical beliefs on leadership than effective leadership itself
Implicit leadership theories:
- Each individual's underlying assumptions, stereotypes or beliefs influence the
extent to which a follower views his or her leader as good or bad. So the trait
approach may actually be studies of culture.
The Style Approach:
What Leaders Do:
- Consideration
- Initiating structure
- Integration
Different styles are associated with different outcomes.
The contingency approach:
The situation matters
No leader trait or style is effective across every situation.
The New Leadership Approach
Highly concerned with vision, charisma and the importance of ‘framing’
- Framing is shaping how information is interpreted by followers to ‘manage
meaning’ for them
- Helps articulate values, the purpose behind action

Very focused on ‘transformational leadership’
- Transactional leadership: meting out rewards and punishments to get
people to do what you want
- Transformational leadership: providing aspirational visions of a higher
purpose or transformed way of being that motivates others.
