Psychosexual development and defense mechanisms defence mechanisms affect early stages of psychosexual development. Different defense types are used throughout different stages of development. Infantile cast when someone regresses to using an immature defense mechanism as an adult. I. e. saying "i know you are, but what am i?" as a child is ok. But as an adult, would suggest that something is not quite right. Narcissistic defenses used by children & psychotics. Immature defenses used by adolescents (also seen in depression & ocd) Neurotic defenses used by adults under stress (also seen in ocd and hysterics) i. e. rationalization, repression. Mature defenses normal adult adaptive mechanism i. e. humor, sublimation, suppression, altruism. Reaction formation not allowing yourself to act in the way you want. Someone who is gay being homophobic because they don"t want to accept they are gay. 60% of people who got turned on by gay porn were homophobic. 30% who got turned on was not homophobic.
