Document Summary

In eukaryotic cells, internal membranes create enclosed compartments that segregate different metabolic processes (membrane-enclosed organelles) Basic set of membrane-enclosed organelles found in most animal cells. Rough = ribosomes attached to the cytosolic surface; ribosomes actively synthesize proteins that are delivered into the er membrane or into er interior (lumen) Organelles occupy half the volume of a eukaryotic cell, membrane associated with them is much larger than the plasma membrane may have evolved through invagination (folding that creates a pocket) of the plasma membrane. Pic above: nuclear membranes and the er. Prokaryotic cell dna molecule is attached to the plasma membrane. The plasma membrane with dna attached could have invaginated and formed a two-layered envelope of the membrane surrounding the dna. This envelope pinched off from plasma membrane and produced a nuclear compartment with nuclear pores for communication with the cytosol.
