Document Summary

2% of body weight (8% of organic material) Responsible for storage, expression, and transmission of genetic information. Stores genetic info in the form of genes. Two strands held together by h bonds. Strands must separate in order to transmit genetic code. Made of nucleotides- connected by sugar- phosphate bonds. Cell- smallest unit in the body that has the characteristics of life. Multi-cellular organisms are made of eukaryotic cells. Cytoplasm- everything inside the cell except the nucleus. Cytosol- the fluid that is inside the cell membrane but outside the organelles. Selective barrier (controls what can pass in and out of the cell) Anchors cells to other cells and to extracellular matrix. Provides sites for protein filament attachment for transmission of force. Cholesterol in the membrane adds stability/ rigidity to the cell membrane. Cholesterol is also important in vesicle formation. Proteins are also found in the plasma membrane. Only attached to the inside or outside of the cell membrane.
