Document Summary
Child and adolescent psychology: ch 1 infancy-early childhood. Child: period from infancy to puberty, which is the age reached to be able to reproduce. Development: a process of growth over time- children gain insight into adult behavior. Parents are able to see their own traits in their biological children. Why do people study child development: to find insight and connections to our own behavior, differences between genders, how things affect development. Children were seen/born as evil- they need harsh discipline. Ages 6-7 children were seen as miniature adults-involved with language. John locke (1600"s-1700"s): children were born as blank slates believed in nature vs. nurture. Locke believed in nurture: child changes based on experiences. Believed children were born with nothing: up to us to teach them and share experiences. Rouso: saw children as good and moral. Forced into work and nuclear homes to work and help family.
