Frontal lobes, responsible for attention, executive functioning: seen on mris. Adhd is believed to be largely a neurological disorder. Diet, allergy, lead can be possible causes, but there is no empirical support as a primary cause of adhd. Note that reduced amounts of dopamine may be related to behavioral symptoms! Adoption studies: rates of adhd nearly 3x higher in biological vs adoptive parents of children with adhd. Twin studies: hereditability estimates of . 80 or higher; note that the mechanism is unclear though! Specific gene studies: genes are involves in dopamine regulation. The child"s adhd behavior can affect the parents" behavior; improvements in the parent-child interaction happen when the adhd behavior decreases. Alters activity in the brain by affecting important neurotransmitters. Side effects: reduced appetite, weight loss, insomnia, irritability, suppression of growth and height, etc. Provides parents with skills to help manage child"s behavior, reduce parent-child conflict, and cope with difficulties of raising a child with adhd.
