Document Summary

Diabetes mellitus: metabolic disorders that are characterized by elevated blood glucose or disor insulin metabolism. Cells that do not respond well to insulin. Glycosuria - abnormal amount of glucose in the urine. Non-fasting plasma glucose 200 mg/dl or above & classic symptoms. Plasma glucose 2 hours after a 75 gm glucose load = 200 mg/dl and above. Acids in the blood is partially corrected by breathing out carbon dioxide. Glucagon becomes more activated when there is low insulin -> unrestricted breakdown of fat and muscle protein. Increased fatty acids going to liver -> get changed into ketone bodies. Insulin receptor, something binds to it telling it to absorb glucose out of bloodstream. Insulin receptors are not functioning as they should for diabetics. Sometimes insulin therapy is used because in some cases it can be too low. Can occur in any type of diabetic if not properly managed. Could reverse out: economic strain - type 2, treatment goals.
