Document Summary

9/13/17: ch 16 hormone interactions, hormone concentration, specific glands & Synergistic are additive, while permissive leads to an increase in responsiveness from the target organ. Eg. estradiol (female reproductive system) increases the number of receptors for progesterone in uterus, therefore making the uterus more sensitive to progesterone. On the other hand, there"s antagonistic during which 2 hormones have opposite effects (eg. insulin & glucagon) Lowering blood sugar glucose levels vs increasing blood sugar levels respectively. Most hormones = half life (in mins to hours) Primary effects -> target cell can add extra receptors for hormone when hormone is secreted. In some bad cases, just loses all receptors. Pulsative secretion: pulses of lh lead to pulses of testosterone. Stimulates thyroid gland to increase secretion of thyroid hormones. Increases growth of ovarian follicles and sperm production. Increases ovulation & increases secretion of testosterones. Also supports regulation of male reproductive system. Hypothalamus secretes both releasing & inhibiting hormones.
