Levels of Ecological Study
Understand why organisms live where the do and in what numbers→ break
ecology into several levels→ analysis

Organismal Ecology
Organismal ecologist- explore morphological, physiological, behavioral
adaptations(allows individuals to live successfully in area)
Population Ecology
Population- group of individuals of same species living in same area at same
time
Population ecologist- focus on numbers of individuals in population change over
time
Community Ecology
Biological community- species interacting within a particular area
Community ecologists- study nature/ consequences of interactions between
species
Work- focus on predation, parasitism, competitions, explore how group of
species react to natural disasters like fires, floods
Ecosystem Ecology
Ecosystem- all organisms in particular region with nonliving(abiotic) components
Ecosystem ecologist- how nutrients/ energy move among/between organisms
and nearby atmosphere/soil/water
Humans affect energy flows and climate→ work has direct public policy
implication
Global Ecology
Global ecology- covers biosphere; thin zone surrounding Earth where all life
exists
Field quickly growing→ ecologists rush to identify effects of human impacts on
biosphere
