Document Summary

Code for specific traits (eye color, height, etc) Where a gene is located on the chromosome it its locus (loci in plural form) Each gene has a specific locus on a specific chromosome. Alternative versions of a gene are called alleles. Pair of chromosomes with same genes in the same location. Offspring inherit one chromosome of the pair from mom and one chromosome of th pair from dad. In a non-dividing cell, homologous chromosomes aren"t physically attached to each other. During mitosis, homologous chromosomes aren"t physically attached to each other. They are all jumbled together within the nucleus. Diploid (2n): cell has both pairs of homologous chromosomes. Haploid (n): cell has only one of the pair of homologous chromosomes. Cellular division that reduces chromosome number from diploid to haploid. 4 phases (prophase 1, metaphase 1, anaphase 1, telophase/cytokinesis 1) 4 phases ( same as before but just 2) Occurs only in germ cells- cells that produce gametes.
