Formal: relatively uniform throughout in terms of its identifying criteria. Area class - regions have ill-defined boundaries that are not linear but rather transition zone. Choroplethic - well defined boundaries that are truly linear. All political and administrative units fall under this category. Has a definite center or node - spatial interaction occurs between this center and all other parts of the region (hinterland). All functional regions belong to the area class category. Vernacular: defined by everyday popular perception of their existence. All regions has spatial extent or area: a certain territory that is covered by a region. The center zone of highest concentration is known as the core. The zone of less intensity is down as the domain. The zone of least intensity is the sphere. Examines patterns in the distribution of human activities and environmental processes. Distribution: position, placement, or arrangement of any phenomenon over space.
