Document Summary

Divorce alters the trajectory of family development as well as individual development. Divorce rates: 1 in 8 (not 1/2), we hold a very negative view of american families, 70% of divorces occur within the first three years of marriage, remarriage. 75% of divorced women and 80% of divorced men remarry. These rates change dramatically for women as they age, men"s rates always stay higher. Factors mediating the decision to leave: satisfaction vs distress. Everyone is unhappy in their relationship at some time, but we usually hold on to some hope that there is hope for the relationship. Distress: negative sentiment overrides everything, there is no hope or future for the relationship. Is divorce feasible for me: dependence (2 factors) You"re more dependent if you do not have any alternatives. Women have control over economic resources, they have money and jobs and can take care of themselves: changes in women"s educational achievements, widespread availability and improvements in contraception.
