PUR 4932 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Campaign Button, Action News, Intension
Document Summary
Intro to political communication: what is politics, traditional campaigning yes, but broader than that. Aka: different groups coming together and making binding decisions. Still going to have a political lens: make sure you are thinking about politics very broadly. We have people and groups of people who are coming together to try and make a decision. The try is what we will be focusing on: what is political communication, has been around and defined as poli comm since the 1950s ish. Involves three main characters: politicians, media elites, citizens: messages. Mediated or interpersonal: media is huge, cannot ignore the mediatization of politics and how that influences citizens. Beyond elections: not just an election, an election time period. Not just who we elect: after the election, before the election, everything that influences our day to day lives, taxation, gas prices, etc. Macro effects how do all of those individuals then influence society: functions of media, surveillance.
