A tyrannical regime where the rich rule over the poor by using violence.
Over the course of the 18th century how people live, how people put food on the table, how
people put body and soul together will shift. A higher portion of people will work for others under
than their direct control rather than controlling their own work and time.
A century of rapid population growth. Increases fast. 1700-1710 population of England
grew by 3.4%. 1731-1741 5.9% increase. 1770s 9.2% increase. Population doubles between
1701 and 1811. Increasingly concentrated. Increasing proportion are in cities and it becomes
increasingly urban. London was 10 times larger than the next biggest city. Continues to grow
across the 18th century. 1700 350000 people. Center of networks of trade. Money comes into
London or passes through London.
Coastal towns develop so London has less of a proportion. Bristol becomes a booming port city
and a major port for the Atlantic trade. Liverpool is also growing, 500 people in 16th century, 28
streets in 17th century, 1700 between 5,000 and 6,000 people, 1750 50,000, 1800 83,000.
Liverpool is the largest slave trade depot in Europe in the 18th century. Happening because of
developments in a world economy founded on flesh. Other towns growing as well through
different kinds of connections.
Plymouth, Portsmouth, Southampton: centers of shipbuilding. Ships involved in trade as
well as ships for the royal navy. Sailors and merchants and people associated with making ships
as well as people that move the cargo.
Royal Navy, not necessarily there because they want to be. Impressment. Naval towns
also have a diverse population from all over the world because sailors are a very diverse work
force.
Increasing amount of printed material causes inland towns to grow. Newspapers,
posters, leaflets, flyers etc.
Low literacy early on in Wales. Literacy is connected with religion.
Senesino opera singer and performed in oratories.
Enlightenment. Interest in the power of reason. Science, economics, language, changes are
hugely costly for a lot of people.
Scientific Revolution. Phrase used for an era starting in the renaissance describing growth and
development of ideas in a new science. Use of ordinary language. Interest in practical results.
Willingness to challenge the ideas of things that were said to work. Conflict with religion and
how churches said things worked. 1543 Copernicus, argument that sun is the center of the
universe and not the Earth. Galileo middle of 16th century to the 17th century, use of telescope
and observation. Robert Boyle, PV. Francis Bacon contributor to how scientific knowledge is
made, induction and deduction. Newton’s laws, 16th and 17th century.
