Norms : customs, traditions, standards, rules, values and all other criteria which are standardized as a consequence of the contact of individuals. By normative it means such social behaviour is characteristics of some socio-cultural collective unit. Folkays: habitual customs exhibited by a group because they were helpful in meeting basic needs. Norms can very in the extent to which they are injunctive/descriptive. Injunctive norms: prescribing valued social behavior which are approved by society. Motivates by giving rewards/punishments for a behaviour. Descriptive norms: informing on how others act in similar situations. Norms include rules for forbidding unacceptable behaviors. Taboos: a rule against doing or saying something in a particular culture or religion. Rules and standards that are understood by members of a group and that guide/constrain social behaviour without the force of laws. May or may not be explicitly states. Sanctions arise from social networks not the legal system. Can include our own, valued others or societal expectations.
