Help with genetics question. I need explanation for answers. My prediction is: I would predict that one allele is producing two mRNAs, one normal and one abnormal. And the other allele is producing one mRNA of abnormal size.

I need help what kind of test can be done to prove this.

A child has been admitted to your hospital with low blood O2 levels. A test for β thalassemia (a Northern blot) was done using a standard probe for β globin mRNA. This blot gave three different bands, indicating the patient has mRNA of three different sizes: one larger than normal, one smaller than normal, and one normal. The parents of the patient are both from Mediterranean countries but there is no reasonable chance that they are related.

a. Devise a hypothesis for the genotype of the child that explains how their genotype gives β thalassemia and also three different sizes of mRNA.

b. Devise a test (or tests) that will determine if your hypothesis is correct.

c. What results would you predict your test would give if your hypothesis is correct.
