Background and context
The mitochondrion is an organelle that is present only in eukaryotic organisms since it is a double-membrane-bound organelle. The outer mitochondrial membrane surrounds the inner mitochondrial membrane and allows the passage of molecules and ions through the protein-based carriers. The inner membrane of the mitochondria is much like a semipermeable plasma membrane. It has proteins that carry out ATP synthesis and electron transport.
