Document Summary
Argues that to understand behaviour, we must examine the brain and nervous system. An underlying assumption is that for every thought or behaviour, there"s a corresponding physical event taking place in the brain. Region of the brain surrounding the , which is involved in complex thinking. Tissue connecting the two hemispheres of the brain, allowing them to communicate. Left hemisphere cognitive abilities, speaking, writing, reading, calculating. 10 15% of population is left handed. By age of 21, one third have died. By age 50, decrease to 5% of population. More left handed people suffer from immune disease. Higher rate of left handedness in twins. Left handed people make up 45 to 55 of the lesbian/gay community. Action potential: when a resting neuron"s stimulated by another neuron, a surge of electrical energy moves down the axon. Agonists: drugs that mimic the effect a neurotransmitter. Antagonists: drugs given to prevent a particular neurotransmitter from binding to the post synaptic membrane.
