SOCA02H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Domestic Violence, Unintended Consequences, Labeling Theory
Document Summary
Crime control: do we explain deviance, and assume conformity as a given. Or: explain conformity, and assume deviance (nonconformity) is natural. People can develop ties or bonds to the established order. Or to deviant groups: or to both! The proper research question is not: why do some people engage in deviance? , but why don"t more people engage in deviance? . Have strong propensity to deviance: can be fun & potentially rewarding. Conformity due to strong social controls: attachment and involvement in conventional institutions. If you want to be a lawyer, you cannot have a criminal record of any sort. Attachment/involvement: family, non-deviant peers, schools, jobs, community, sports. Use police, courts, prisons to deter those with attachments to society. Find arrest > less subsequent violence: experiment contributes to mandatory arrest laws. If you have a stake in society: mandatory arrest lowers subsequent offences. If no stake: mandatory arrest increases subsequent offences.
