Document Summary

*consciousness: our awareness of ourselves & our environment. Physiological: ex hallucinations, orgasm, food & oxygen starvation. Perception, memory, thinking, language, attitudes all operate on 2 levels often simultaneously as a principal of dual processing. *attention selective blindness: focusing of conscious awareness on particular stimulus inattentional blindness: failing to see/notice things when our attention is occupied elsewhere change blindness: failing to notice changes in the environment. Our bodies roughly synchronize with the 24 hour cycle of day by an internal biological clock called the circadian rhythm. About every 90 minutes we cycle through 4 sleep stages (rem, nrem-1, nrem-2, nrem-3) alpha waves: relatively slow brainwaves of a relaxed awake state delta waves: large, slow brain waves associated with deep sleep. Nrem-1: this is a stage between sleep and wakefulness. The muscles are active, and the eyes roll slowly, opening and closing moderately.
