Motivation: process that influences the direction, persistence & vigor of goal-directed behaviour. Darwin"s theory views that instincts motivate much of behaviour. Instinct: an inherited predisposition to behave in a predictable and specific way when exposed to a stimulus. Modern evolutionary psychologists propose that many psychological motives have evolutionary underpinnings. Adaptive significance of behaviour is important for understanding motivation through this view. Why are we such social creature survival advantages such as sharing resources & protection. Our body"s biological systems are delicately balanced to ensure survival. When hot our body automatically tries to cools itself. Homeostasis: a state of internal physiological equilibrium that body strives to maintain. Maintaining homeostasis requires a sensory mechanism for detecting changes in the internal environment, a response system that can restore equilibrium & control centre that receives info that sensors & activates the response system. Homeostatic regulation also can involve learned behaviours.
