Document Summary
Prof shows a graph showing the population from 1200-2000. The population quantity has always been quite flat, but the graph shot up sharply from 1850. If births go unchecked, the population will outstrip the food supply. Explained by: demographic transition theory (this tends to be on the final) In the early industrial, birth rate is high, because they die easily and they grow to support parents. In mature industrial, when kids don"t die easily, you don"t need twelve of them. There are not enough young people to support the older generation. Lead to predictions of billion or more Population growth starts to decline in late 1970s. Fertility rate drops from 6 to 4 in two decades (2. 1 = stable population rate) Limits to growth (we were using up the earths resources) Population bomb (the fear of third world population, much of it referred to china and world famine)
