Background and context

Desmosomes are the intracellular structures for adhesion that are vital for cell to cell attachment majorly in the epithelial and myocardial tissues and in some cases other tissues too. They also act as sites for anchorage for the intermediate filaments which are important for the maintenance of tissue architecture in general. The desmosomal cadherin family is majorly composed of desmogleins (DSGs) and desmocollins (DSCs) which is a major structural unit of the desmosome.
