Background and context

Gregor Johann Mendel is known as the father of genetics. He conducted experiments on the garden pea to study the principles of inheritance and variation. He selected the pea plant for his studies because of many characters like short life span, bisexual flowers, a floral structure suitable for artificial hybridization, and so on.
