Background and context

Microorganisms are used both naturally and artificially in a variety of fields. Even if they are damaging in certain ways, they are also beneficial in other ways. They are utilized to fix atmospheric nitrogen, survive in the human stomach to aid digestion, and act as natural fertilizers, among other things.
