Background and context

The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction catastrophe happened around 66 million years ago, resulting in the extinction of three-quarters of all animal and plant species on Earth. With the exception of a few ectothermic species like sea turtles and crocodilians, no tetrapods weighing more than 25 kilos survived.
