BIOL 201 Final: Cells in their environment

45 views8 pages

Document Summary

Cells in our body are located in different tissues. The signals coming from tissues can be of a physical and a chemical nature. In tissues, cells interact with other cells (cell-cell adhesions) and with the extracellular matrix (ecm) There are a lot of cell adhesion molecules (many subtypes within any big categories). This huge diversification of the type of cell adhesion molecules allows the cell to have the ability to stick to a very wide range of substrate (various types of cells and extracellular matrices). They can then express the type of adhesions they want to only interact with what they want/need: cell-cell adhesion: 2 possible ways for a cell to tightly bind another cell: Could make 1 very strong connection (high affinity) Could make many weak connections (each one of them has a low affinity, ie it is forming and breaking). By adding these, end up with a very strong connection overall.
