Instrumental conditioning- allows us to associate actions and consequences. Inhibition- if the contingency is unlearned, then following extinction, retraining between the cs and us lead to acquisition of the cr at about the same rate as the original training. It suggests that extinction leads to learning an inhibitory response. However, following a rest period, if the cs is presented once more, it once again elicits a cr. This means the original learned association between the cs and us is not learned and that extinction promotes a learned inhibitory response that competes with the original learned contingency. If a stimulus is potentially harmful, you will not require separate conditioning experiences to learn that relationship as subjects shift their learned response to the conditional stimuli to other similar stimuli.
