Goals of research: explanation, why people do what they do, how they do it, etc. Important because e. g. political party trying to figure out how to appeal to the public: generalization, make generalization to be able to predict e. g. how the pop will vote, predictions. Or is it constructed by human interaction: affects epistemology, epistemology, how we see knowledge being created, politics, power, e. g. indigenous rights has recently sparked research interest, getting the people to tell their side. Reviewing literature: what areas have been researched, what are the controversies, good, gives you a place to start, what is surprising, what is missing, pg 357. Research process focus/research question: theory, topic, design a study, collect data. How good do they feel/think about themself, how they think others feel about them: assumptions, about social life. Important for inductive and deductive reasoning: relationships.
