PSYB10H3 : ch. 5 - the self
Document Summary
Functions of the self researchers have found that the self serves both an organizational function and an executive function. The way they think about certain things will depend on their slef-schemas: sara plays a lot of sports and athleticism is an important part of her self-schema. The evidence then allows them to come to a conclusion that the good trait is a part of their self-schemas. ex. dieters are more likely to break their diets at night. People are best at self-control when they are well rested and not too stressed out. It was found that when people are made to feel self-aware, they tended to assume that another person also would see their traits but the assumption that others had access to their inner thoughts and feelings was incorrect. If you can change your behaviour to match your internal guidelines (eg. quit smoking), you will do so.
