CHAPTER 14 lecture notes (final material) - Things that happen to us in early childhood have a way of shaping what we become - the ID wants gratification. When it wants something it wants it immediately. - EGO- brings in the realities of life and creates a balance. - SUPEREGO- provides the moral constrains that hold back ID behaviour. - When there is too much mental energy is spent in dealing with the conflicts between the id and the ego and superego, the individual can be prone to mental illness - Freudian conflicts- there is an urgeimpulse, then there is conflict, and something that prevents or blocks these urges from being fulfilled. - Repressing- push it out of conscience repressing negative feelingsseeking distraction from the upsetting thoughts. When you repress extremely upsetting thoughtsevents they can manifest themselves later in life as mental illnesses. - Reaction Formation- maintaining the negative feelings, but trying to defensively turn them into positive ones. - Freuds theory of psychosexual de
