PSYC18H Psychology of Emotion Lecture 1 To be more emotional when we feel like holding it in. Some cultures favor holding it in. Some people tend to be more expressive or reserved with their emotions. Understanding means that when you talk to someone about your problem where they have experience of going through what you are going through. Give you a framework of which you can understand your own situation. Expressive system and vesteral systems have a kind of relationship- if your not showing it on your face your burning inside if your showing it on your face your not burning inside. Emotions are feelings with meanings. The clinical psychologist wants to know how to help people deal with unconscious or repressed emotions, how to help people deal with loss, how to help people become more integrated and productive, how to help people sleep better, deal with anxiety, etc. We can individual pain and group pain. Goal of clinical psychologist is to help you come to terms with the feelings that you put and hide away. First major challenge: to understand emotion as a distinctive experience while at the same time trying to understand how it interacts with cognitive and bodily processes. Ludwig Binswangers 3 worlds: Eugenwelt- personal and private (with ourselves) Mitwekt- social world with others Umwelt- organic and physical world ( the world around) Existential concept of thrownness- we are thrown as if by accident into particular worlds. Existential phenomenology- existstential because they are concerned about your existence and phenomenology because they are concerned with what youve experienced. We are in many worlds with many different people and different places. Life themes: Adaptation (Darwin) Meaning-in-the-world (Existential) Dasien- means to be in the world. We live in a world of challenges and a world where we have goals. Trying to adjust to the demand of the world around us, demands from school, work, family, etc. You have needs inside or challenges from the outside that you must adjust to or adapt to and be oriented about or you will lose. This is the adaptation Meaning in the world is how we figure out what life is all about, what makes us do certain things and why do thing happen to us. Life episodes- these are events that take place in these worlds as we struggle with these life themes. Episode is an internally coherent event- it is internally organized. We have experiences and feelings about our life-worlds and events that take place within
