Document Summary
Module 10. 2 infancy and childhood: cognitive and emotional. Jean piaget observed and tested his children"s abilities. Eventually his projects led to cognitive development: the study of changes in memory, thought and reasoning processes that occur throughout the system. Piaget interested in explaining how different was of thinking and reasoning develop. Piaget"s theory: knowledge accumulates and is modified by two processes assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation is a conservative process, whereby people fit new info into the belief system they already possess: ex// all girls have long hair, then one day seeing a girl with short hair, thinking it"s a boy. Accommodation is a creative process whereby people modify their belief structures based on experience: ex// oh, it"s not a boy, it"s just a girl with short hair. We either ignore, deny or accommodate the info. Cognitive development passes through four stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. The sensorimotor stage: living in the material world.
