Organizations are social inventions for accomplishing common goals through group effort: ex. fraternity/blue jays/companies/etc. Social inventions their essential characteristic is the coordinated presence of people, not things : people represent opportunities and challenges. Field of organizational behaviour = understanding people/managing them to work effectively. Group effort: organizations are based on group effort, organizations depend on interaction/coordination among people to accomplish goals. Informal grouping occurs aka friendships develop/people form informal alliances to accomplish work: field of ob is concerned with how to get people to practice effective teamwork. Refers to attitudes/behaviours of individuals/groups in organizations. Studies the attitudes/behaviour to know how to effectively manage/change them. Studying attitude = focusing on how they feel/if they happy with job/how committed they are to their goals. Human resources management = closely related but distinct discipline: refers to programs/practices/systems to acquire/develop/retain employees in organizations, ex. recruitment/selection, compensation, training/development.
