Document Summary

Chapter 5: the genetics of bacteria and their viruses. Most plasmids = dna circles but much smaller than the main bacterial genome. Key defining feature their dna is not enclosed in a membrane-bound nucleus. Genome of bacteria = single molecule of double stranded dna, form of a circle. Bacteria in nature often contain extra dna elements = plasmids. Bacteria can be parasitized by specific viruses bacteriophage/ phage. Bacterial cells reproduce asexually genomic dna replicates and is partitioned into daughter cells . Hereditary processes in prokaryotes can undergo asexual and sexual reproduction. Phages/ other viruses different from the organisms studied to date. Mutation occurs in asexual cells same way as it does in eukaryotes partitioning is different than in sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction 2 dna molecules are brought together from different sources. 1st process = conjugation contact and fusion of 2 different bacterial cells. After fusion one cell (donor) sometimes transfers genomic dna to the other cell.
