In turin the government became involved in the administration of the hospitals in order to maintain welfare provision and order. Most provided minimal medical care but patients benefitted from rest and good food. There were also plague hospitals used to isolate those who were diseased. There was a rapid expansion of hospitals in the 17th and 18th centuries that was made possible by new funding sources. Before the revolution, paris hospitals were taken over by the statue but in the early 19th century they were taken over by private charities. There were only 5 functioning hospitals in all of london and were run by city authorities, finance by private donations.
