HIST 249 Chapter Notes - Chapter reading : Trepanning, Frontal Lobe, Catatonia
Document Summary
Prefrontal lobotomy was devised by egas moniz in 1935. It was performed on over 20 patients who have been observed for over two months. There was peripheral circulation issues - cold, most, cyanotic hands tend to become pink after the operation and to remain so for a period of time. In one case auricular fibrillation due to rheumatic heart disease disappeared. There were marked alternations in blood pressure that were observed. There was an operation of two frontal lobes performed in the interval of one week. The patient remained catatonic for two days. She accepted food one day and then ate it by herself the next day. The old phobias have returned progressively in some instances like in episodes of excitement. One died after the operation of cerebral hemorrhage and another is in the hospital for mental disease for attempted suicide.
