Document Summary

Hobbes / leviathan / chs xxxi, xlii (mycourses) notes. Xxxi of the kingdom of the god by nature. Thus far in leviathan, hobbes has discussed ideals and should for political philosophy, what the government should be like based on the premise of human nature, etc . In this later chapter, he makes a switch from utopian ideals to theological discussion particularly that pertaining to biblical discussion of the christian god. The condition of mere nature (or natural liberty) is war and anarchy, which leads men to uphold the laws of nature, to avoid the condition. Hence, all that is missing are the laws of god. God rules by words only, that are made known to all people. Because of his previous assertion that a sovereign ruler must be the authoritative head figure to avoid dissent and civil war, hobbes sees a possibility in the laws of god becoming such a sovereign ruler.
