Looks at white guilt and shame, especially amongst upper class white liberals. Argues that critical self-love is a better affect. Focuses on how affect is constitutive of the self they consist of responses to and judgements of the world that cannot be divided up into reason and emotion. Sees emotion as similarly complex and relating to intelligence and rationality. Both emotion and affect are ways of processing and reacting to the world. They"re relational, so the context and our identities are always co- constituted through affect. They"re agential they"re related to rationality and can be purposefully altered. Differentiates between positive and negative affect not in a moral sense but rather see negative affect as that which tears someone down and positive affect as that which serves to build someone up. Because affect is relational you can"t build someone up by making them better at tearing others down they will in turn be torn down by feedback from their environment.
