Emotions serve important purpose in our social life but they are not always rational. Some worried that emotions difficult to define. Emotions: psychological state or process mediate between concerns of goals and events of world. Sylvan tomkins: emotion give priority of one concern over other. Ex: someone demean us we are angry and concentrate on what is done to us. Now, emotions are locally rational - rationality does not range over all possible considerations. Emotions help us deal adaptively with concerns specific to our current context. They are local to concerns that has achieved priority. Emotions - source of value ( incl. what we love, dislike, and dispise) Helps us form and engage in relationship. Psychological research: person"s perception of facial expression, physiological responses, and person"s responses to questions about his/her experience, and emotions between us and others. Emotion is commitment to another ( make other concerns out own)
