Document Summary

Memory: a system or process by which the products or results of learning are ftored for future use. Hermann ebbighaus pioneered the systematic study of memory in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A focus of his research was on nonsense syllables, which are usually composed of three letters arranged in a consonant-vowel-consonant sequence (ie. gok, taf) Because these sequences have no meaning, he believed he could study how associations between novel stimuli are formed without any other factors such as previous learning, complicating the results. Free recall is the task of having to remember as many items as possible, regardless of their sequence this is now the preferred way of measuring memory. The paired-associate learning testing method is the task of associating an unfamiliar word or nonsense syllable with a familiar word (often used to learn the vocab of a foreign language) Ebbinghaus said that you can expect your best recall shortly after a learning session.
