Memory: a system or process by which the products or results of learning are ftored for future use. Hermann ebbighaus pioneered the systematic study of memory in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A focus of his research was on nonsense syllables, which are usually composed of three letters arranged in a consonant-vowel-consonant sequence (ie. gok, taf) Because these sequences have no meaning, he believed he could study how associations between novel stimuli are formed without any other factors such as previous learning, complicating the results.
