Of all possible characteristics, we are most likely to notice if a person is male or female. The word sex refers to a biological classification based on genetic composition, anatomy and hormones. Gender refers to the psychological and social phenomena associated with being feminine or masculine- as theses concepts are defined in a given culture e. g. vagina and penis refer to sex, a babies pink or blue clothing represent gender. Sigmund freud said that men and women behave differently because they differ in their genetic and hormonal makeup. The use to the term gender" acknowledges that a particular difference between males and females is not an inevitable consequence of biological sex. In the embryonic stage, errors in sexual development can and do occur intersexes are people born with mixtures of male and female biological characteristics (1-2/1000 people) Hermaphrodites have a combination of female and male internal and external genitalia, including one testis and one ovary.
