PSYC 215 Chapter 6: PSYC 215 - Chp 6
Document Summary
Soldiers who have been trained to kill will abandon the mind-set and ignore orders sent by superiors on the battle field or if they do follow through, they feel overwhelming guilt and sorrow. What can we learn from sympathy breakouts: sympathy is a powerful trigger of altruistic behaviour, emotions are important guides for thoughts and behaviours. Emotions have a powerful influence on what ppl perceive, how they reason, what they value, Sympathy breakouts have led soldiers to shift from a fight or flight pattern of action to one of altruism and what they deem to be right and wrong concern. Gratitude motivates us to reward others for their generosity. Guilt prompts us to make amends when we have harmed. Anger impels us to right social wrongs and restore justice. In general, emotions motivate and guide appropriate goal-directed behaviour that supports stronger and smoother social relationships.
